Throughout 1983, Goff and Schaer performed as "-Ing" before live audiences in several San Francisco Bay Area nightclubs and theaters. Their sets were loaded with unique music which they played through a Frippertronics-style audio loop system. The setlist for this San Francisco show is a typical example of the material that Goff and Schaer showcased throughout 1983.
Most of -Ing's compositions had their origins in improvisations, and this, in turn, shows up in the way that Goff and Schaer constantly reshaped melodies, rhythms, and pitches when playing their songs. They also improvised the mechanics of the reel-to-reel tape decks of their Frippertronics system to produce unique noises and rhythms. Other improvisational tricks that -Ing regularly dabbled with included using vibrators to stimulate guitar strings and singing directly into guitar pickups. –Ing unleashed all of these tricks and more for the Elite Club audience. The recording presented here originated directly from the Frippertronics tape that Goff and Schaer created during their performance.
-Ing was the opening act for this show, followed by post-punk rockers Big Race and The Lifers. Goff and Schaer were added to the bill just days before the show took place; the name "-Ing" does not appear on the promotional show flyer. A friend of Schaer's (his name sadly long lost to history) shot a few photos of the performance, of which only three very rough photocopies now exist. Scans of the photocopied photos and the show flyer are included in this archive.
"The Fillmore Elite Club, May 28, 1983" is Volume Four of the "Unveiled -INGredients" series of audio recordings. Schaer and Goff recorded many hours of tape loop experiments as "-Ing" between 1980 and 1984. Most of the reel-to-reel tapes from those sessions have long since disappeared. Steve Schaer himself sadly left behind the world of the living in 1998 as well. However, in 2019, Steve's widow, Dee Ann, discovered some cassette copies of a few of the original -Ing reels, which Schaer had recorded back in the 1980s. She passed these off to Robert Silverman (one of the original -Ing artists represented on -Ing's first public release), and he forwarded them to Goff in the spring of 2020. The "Unveiled -INGredients" series was created from these cassette recordings.
